Pozzolan: VCAS 50-lb bag

$31.23

VCAS 160 is a white pozzolan that improves long-term strength, decreases porosity, reduces efflorescence and eliminates alkali-silica reaction.

VCAS should be used at the following dosages:

  • 15% cement replacement for precast mixes
  • 20% cement replacement for GFRC mixes

VCAS is a pozzolan manufactured by Vitro Minerals. VCAS stands for vitrified calcium alumino-silicate, and is manufactured from industrial waste glass. This is the finest grade VCAS 160, which has a much finer particle size than the other grades and has the reactivities normally associated with silica fume and metakaolin with the advantage of being white in color.

Like all pozzolans, VCAS improves long-term strength, decreases porosity, reduces efflorescence and eliminates alkali-silica reaction. Click here for an article on the basics of pozzolans.

We recommend VCAS over other pozzolans because it:

  • enhances workability
  • is white
  • is recycled
  • has good quality control

In contrast, although it does have faster reaction times than VCAS, metakaolin reduces workability (makes the concrete sticky), and it is a manufactured product, not a recycled product.

The pozzolans slag and fly ash are pure waste products and therefore completely recycled, but they have no quality control and can vary widely in reaction time and color.

VCAS should be used at the following dosages:

  • 15% cement replacement for precast mixes
  • 20% cement replacement for GFRC mixes

To calculate cement replacement, first determine how much cement the mix would use. For example, suppose your mix needed a total of 100 pounds of cement. To replace 20%, you would instead use 80 pounds of cement and 20 pounds of VCAS in your mix. Click here for an article about dosages for all pozzolans.

Please note that pozzolans ARE NOT NEEDED if you are using CSA cement instead of Portland cement. Click here for an article explaining why.
