When most people think of concrete, images of sidewalks or driveways come to mind. But for Dian Mullis, founder of Pro Concrete Countertops, concrete is a boundless medium for creativity, artistry, and innovation. From her shop in the Twin Cities, Minnesota, Dian transforms this humble material into stunning concrete countertops, fireplace surrounds, wall panels, and custom artistic pieces that elevate living spaces. Her journey from mechanical engineer to concrete artisan exemplifies the fusion of technical precision and artistic vision.

From Engineering to Art

Dian’s path to concrete artistry was unconventional but deeply rooted in her problem-solving mindset as a mechanical engineer and applied mathematician. After earning her degrees, she spent years in the corporate world as an engineering director, tackling complex challenges with precision and logic. However, it was the hands-on experience of designing her own homes—including spaces tailored to accommodate her eldest daughter’s mobility needs—that sparked a fascination with the versatility of concrete.

Driven by her love for this durable yet malleable material, Dian sought formal training to master advanced techniques. In 2019, she enrolled in CCI’s comprehensive Ultimate course, where CCI founder Jeff Girard introduced her to glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC), a high-performance material that allows artisans to push the limits of design. She was also inspired by the legendary Buddy Rhodes at this course.

“I knew I wanted to learn GFRC,” Dian shared in a recent conversation with Jeff. “But I got way more than I bargained for—Jeff’s guidance has been invaluable.” Over the years, their collaboration has included countless hours of technical discussions and hands-on problem-solving.Dian Mullis and Jeff Girard

Innovation Meets Integrity

Dian’s engineering background has made her meticulous about product testing and quality assurance. Before delivering any piece to a client, she rigorously tests every material and technique in her workshop. This dedication led her to adopt Integrity Concrete Products, a high-performance line designed by Jeff Girard himself. From sealers like Omega and Ovation to the all-in-one Integrity PowerPack, these products have become essential components in Dian’s creative process.

“I love that they’re water-based and low-odor—I’m very particular about smells,” she said with a laugh. “The superplasticizer really is a ‘power punch’ that makes everything flow better.” By leveraging these innovative materials, Dian achieves both the aesthetic and structural excellence her clients expect from high-quality concrete countertops.

Pushing Creative Boundaries

Dian is not just a fabricator—she’s an artist. Her showroom is a vibrant testament to her creativity, filled with colorful, integrally pigmented pieces, curvy benches, and textured samples that defy conventional notions of concrete countertops. One of her favorite creations is a playful sculpture featuring a cheeseburger and fries made entirely from concrete.

“Concrete doesn’t have to be gray and boring,” Dian emphasized. “I love pushing boundaries with color, texture, and form.” Her innovative approach extends to collaborations with artists and interior designers, where she creates bespoke pieces that reflect both her clients’ visions and her unique artistry.

Sharing Knowledge and Inspiring Others

Dian’s passion for concrete countertops goes beyond her own work. She frequently shares behind-the-scenes insights on Instagram, where she documents projects from start to finish. This transparency has sparked conversations with fellow artisans and inspired countless followers.

“I love that it creates a dialogue,” she said. “We all learn from each other’s processes.”

Her dedication to sharing knowledge echoes Jeff Girard’s philosophy of lifting the perception of what concrete can be. “It’s important for everyone in this industry to see what’s possible,” Jeff noted. “Dian’s work shows that concrete countertops can be both functional and beautiful—and that’s inspiring.”
